In October 2022, the government has asked mobile handset manufacturers to quickly roll out FOTA updates for 5G services in the DoT meeting on 5G held on 12 October. The handset manufacturers committed that d they were working with telcos to streamline a plan. Certain handset manufacturers asked time till mid-November end to rollout software FOTA updates.
However, it appears that, despite the commitment, many handset manufacturers are yet to roll out the requisite update for 5G devices to latch on the 5G services. They include Samsung, Apple. Surprisingly, most of the handsets from Chinese companies viz., Redmi, Poco and Oppo are already 5G ready and do not need any update.
The writer has a Samsung model F23 5G but not yet received the 5G update from Samsung. There is no comment from the Company as to when this can be expected.
